With strict accessibility standards and significant scale, the university’s existing web components needed modernization. Many elements did not meet WCAG requirements and failed to deliver consistent branding or performance across devices. The institution required a unified design system to serve varied sub-sites and user groups.

I prioritized accessibility, clarity, and long-term scalability. This included refining typography and contrast for readability, building a flexible style guide, and developing updated components that could be deployed across a range of academic pages and digital environments. I also redesigned high-traffic experiences like search and faculty listings, informed by analytics and user needs.

To support individual colleges within the university, I designed updated hero and navigation patterns that highlighted each school’s identity while remaining consistent with the broader Syracuse brand system. This included integrating Syracuse Orange accents thoughtfully and ensuring accessibility and responsiveness across layouts.

User research and analytics confirmed that search was the primary navigation method across the site. In response, I redesigned the search experience to make it more intuitive and effective. Updates included a simplified interface, improved hierarchy, and enhanced search logic to surface more accurate and actionable results.

Led improvements to faculty search and filtering after users expressed difficulty finding professors and admissions contacts, supporting clearer paths to information. This helped prospective students and current users find the right contacts quickly and confidently.

This work strengthened accessibility, usability, and brand consistency across the university’s web ecosystem. Task completion for prospective students improved by approximately 20 percent, and navigation efficiency increased by 18 percent through refined information architecture and search improvements. Cross-team alignment reduced expected revision cycles, and CMS-ready components accelerated future implementation and supported scalable design growth.
To support long-term scalability and ensure consistent adoption of the new design system, I created a component library that documented typography, color standards, UI elements, and usage guidance. This toolkit provided clear examples and best practices, helping content and development teams implement updates efficiently and consistently across university properties.
